Peoria, AZ (TWV) - Ayrin Vick, a 27-year-old Peoria woman was arrested Wednesday on Murder charges after she allegedly beat her boyfriend's 3-year-old niece to a pulp.According to Peora Police, Vick called 911 on April 7 complaining that her boyfriend's 3-year-old niece had "suddenly collapsed" and was not breathing.
When emergency crews arrived, they performed CPR on the child and transported her to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Detectives interviewing Vick say she explained the child walked into the bathroom under her own power and then "just suddenly collapsed," according to the arrest affidavit.
Investigators became suspicious of the child's injuries. Perhaps it was the clumps of hair missing from the child's head. Perhaps it was the bruising that covered the girl's arms, forehead, cheek, abdomen, chest and back. Perhaps it was the burn above the toddler's eye.
Either way, forensic experts and a subsequent autopsy determined the child's cause of death to be the result of blunt force trauma which was also blamed for many of the child's bruises.
Doctors also concluded the child's life would have likely been saved has she received prompt medical care.
Vick was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on 2nd-degree murder charges and suspicion of child abuse. Bail has not yet been established in the case.
Court records indicate Vick and her boyfriend received custody of the little girl back in March when the child's mother reported to jail to serve out a jail sentence. A 10-month-old baby that was also shared by the couple has been taken into protective custody.
Opinion:
This, unfortunately, is the second case this month we have reported on where a couple was given custody of a child and thanked the court system by abusing that child to death.
It's becoming rather obvious to me that the courts are rushing these kind of custody cases through the system without conducting careful home studies and appropriate follow up care. How many kids have to be beaten to death before the courts treat the custody process with a little more due diligence?
